S T A T E M E N T

The intention of my work is to approach the differences between what has been identified in our culture as natural and unnatural.

As most of the plant and animal life seen today have evolved to their present state due to continual environmental changes, lately the primary focus of my work has been to depict the adaptation of these organisms in conjunction with the changes we constantly make to our own urban landscape. This body of work, New American Landscapes, primarily acts as a record of these changes. The scale, in both size and complexity, is intended to capture a diverse range of ecosystems, and is used simply as a photographic reference of seemingly uncommon events.

The abstract use of nature-photography has acted as an underlying currant in my work, since the pursuit of these changes are primarily depicted in nature publications such as National Geographic, and it's use has encouraged a kind of foresight into the art making process; allowing a contingency to exist between what has been studied to the fullest extent and what we have yet to see.

With the motive of pulling away the extremities to reveal the structure, while at the same time displaying identifies using textural details such as hair, scale, bark, or bone, I'd like to think that many of the subjects in these drawings are seen as organisms (and ecosystems) at their most compromised points of existence.
